I agree with you and do think that Kubrick tried to go for a hat-trick of "casting them as themselves" with Tommy C., but...something went very wrong. I think TC's force of "personality" overwhelmed anything SK was trying to accomplish. Or else I'm allergic to Cruise.
Once again, thanks for reading!
IvanIvanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16443946766217092846noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7488189244830405902.post-20953009086918183392014-01-18T10:01:06.633-08:002014-01-18T10:01:06.633-08:00Great point about the genius of casting Nicholson ...Great point about the genius of casting Nicholson as himself, an ugly misogynistic monster. Same with Ryan O'Neal. Along those lines, trying giving Eyes Wide Shut another go, thinking of his casting of Tom Cruise in the same way -- delusionally self-important in a status-obssessed world, meaninglessly materialistic, aspirational toward something he doesn't really get, cuckolded by his wife who's superior to him, but psychologically trapped by a system that only values her for her looks. Basically, a tool.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7488189244830405902.post-66818111610646179752013-02-11T16:04:10.744-08:002013-02-11T16:04:10.744-08:00This is amusing:

But I really can't see her digging horror films. But I could see Jack dragging her to horror films to get a sadistic glee from her shrieks.

BTW, I'm really kicking myself for not figuring out a way to comment that Nicholson got his start working with horror icon Boris Karloff, whom he mentions in Vivian K.'s documentaryIvanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16443946766217092846noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7488189244830405902.post-31994803923757805522013-01-30T17:21:36.226-08:002013-01-30T17:21:36.226-08:00Lovely piece - I feel a bit more kindly to Wendy t...Lovely piece - I feel a bit more kindly to Wendy than you (mainly because I like characters in horror movies that have such unfettered and honest reactions to the situations unfolding around them), but your argument of her complicity in her fate is persuasive. Curious what you make of Jack's assertion that Wendy's a horror film nut.David Robson, Proprietor, House of Sparrowshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17512358627000077081noreply@blogger.com
